Ross Gilbert was awarded top youth mentor for Williamsburg Learning in 2019 and has never regretted leaving corporate life 6 years ago to fulfill his dream of living intentionally and working in a meaningful capacity with youth. He speaks fluent Japanese and has spent three years living in Japan.

Skyler Gilbert is the founder of Learning Brave LLC, the mother of 5 children; a writer, artist, and adventure planner. She has spent one year living in Japan and can understand about half of what Ross says in Japanese.

Our itinerary for the Japan Summer Youth Tour includes;

We will spend a few days exploring some of the beautiful, the historic, the modern and the weird parts of this incredible city!!

We are happy to tailor some of our time to tour participants special interests, so let us know if you are crazy over Manga or retro video games, or weird and wonderful vending machines and we can help you out!

On our Tokyo itinerary we have;

- Sensoji Temple - an ancient Buhhist temple over 1300 years old!

- Akihabara - the epicentre for electronics, mango and video games. (Also weird vending machines!) Check THIS store out!!

- Gotokuji the supposed origin of Maneki-neko, the “beckoning cat” figurine which is said to bring good fortune and success.

- A Studio Ghibli Tour - the animated films of Hayao Miyazaki are a gateway to a lifelong fascination with Japanese culture.

Other ideas include;

- Purikan no Mecca Shibuya - Photo booth heaven (Japanese style!)

We actually lived in this region of Japan and we absolutely LOVE it!!! We are so excited to share with you some of our most favourite places!

In Gifu over the Summertime, you can get the chance to see local fishermen 'Cormorant Fishing' on the Nagara river. This is a beautiful spectacle lit by firelight where man and bird work together to fish in the ancient ways.

Home of Toyota and the National Sumo tournament. We will spend a day exploring this fantastic city!

Incredible old style city dating back to the Edo Period!

A UNESCO world heritage site, Shirakowago is famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old. Gassho-zukuri means "constructed like hands in prayer", as the farmhouses' steep thatched roofs resemble the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer.

We also plan to include;

-AMAZING food!!!

- A ride on the famous Japanese Bullet Train, straight past Mt Fuji!!

-Cultural enrichment through learning and exploration of the country's past, present and future. **Warning - Ross will be talking constantly about the history of EVERYTHING...(when he's not chatting away in Japanese...)

- Basic Japanese language classes.

- Karaoke.

- Bike Riding (possibly - depends on numbers)

- Movie nights.

- Connection with local Japanese people.

-Workshops and teen connection activities.

We will finalize accommodation once we have firm numbers for the tour. We will likely be sleeping 'Japanese style' - futons on the floor. Japanese houses do not typically have large roomy bedrooms per person, they utilise floor space and use futons which they then pack away during the day. Despite this, Learning Brave will supply a top level of comfortable and traditional accommodation.
